Bill Johnson’s Assessment of Todd Bentley

Bill Johnson assesses Todd Bentley and the Lakeland Revival…

What do you think about Todd Bentley and the Lakeland Revival?

“Todd is a good friend, but more importantly, he is a friend of God. I’ve met very few people in my life who are hungrier for God and will take extended periods of time just to seek Him. God has entrusted him with an extraordinary outpouring for a reason—He can trust him to do whatever He says, regardless of the opinions of others. He is bold—amazingly bold. The miracles are legitimate and increasing. The church of America has asked for a great revival. God wonderfully placed this move in a package that few would have expected, just to see if we’re as hungry as we say we are.”

Recent response to the above answer:”How in God’s name can you endorse Todd Bentley?” This is my response…

In his assessment, Bill Johnson has missed the fact that Todd Bentley is not being criticized or ‘hated’ as a person, but rather, his teaching is being examined because it is extremely unbiblical. He defends Todd on a personal level, but not from a biblical standpoint, as a godly friend and mentor should do. How can the body of Christ give any credibility to an assessment given by someone whose church’s list of ministry links is filled with false prophets?

Keith Miller Chuck Pierce and Todd Bentley’s Conference in Denton,TX July 3,2008 was outstanding!! About 10,000 attended. The negative comments on the blogs were 25 to 1 against Todd Bentley. How wrong they all are!! This is the first move of God where many of the knowledgeable bible believing Evangelicals are not on board with what God is doing in our day.

Dear jp5281, To know God is to know his word and to live it, this he commands us! If the little voices tell you to kick cancer patients and body slam people to heal them, this should be your first flag something is wrong. GOD NEVER goes against what the living word he has given us says.It is your responsibility as a believer to know what Gods word is and to discern when something is amiss.I have seen that it is a lot easier to get money from people when you talk about END TIMES. Its called manipulation! people all over the world are seeing the vedios of these HEALINGS and i dont know about you but i dont want to give my life to a God who is gonna knee me to cure my cancer nor do i want a MAN to tell me the loving God ive givin my life to is telling him to do these things. praise God i do know God well enough to know these things are wrong and not of God. In love and concern, barry

Bill Johnson gives a measured response to the criticism of Todd Bentley and should be commended for his loyalty. However he does not answer the concerns of many sincere Bible believing Christians concerning things which are unbiblical. Let me list some of these concerns:-

1 His tattoos – Had he received these before he was a Christian they would pose no problem. However Todd received these several years later and says that this was something God told him do. Clearly this is contrary to Leviticus 19:28. In addition some of the tattoos appear to have occultic connections eg. the upside down dead face of Christ on his right arm. The (Medusa?) tattoo on his shin. What explanation does Todd give for this? What comment can Bill Johnson offer?

His violent actions – Kicking an older lady in the face; kneeing somebody in the stomach; knocking the tooth out of a Chinese man – these are not the actions of a man of God. Nowhere in scripture is healing administered in this way and Christ spitting and making a mud pack does not involve any violence and in no way compares to the above.

His commanding of angels, Emma, out of body experiences etc. Nowhere in scripture is man found commanding angels – that is God’s perogative. Nowhere are angels mentioned in the female gender. Paul speaks of one experience only where he was caught up to heaven; Todd Bentley if I understand correctly has out of body experiences frequently. He testifies of “angels” performing an operation on him and imparting special gifts to him. The scripture speaks of spiritual gifts being bestowed by the Holy Spirit (although they may be imparted by the laying on of hands) – certainly not by angels in an operating theatre.

These are some of the concerns of sincere Christians who hold to the ultimate authority of God’s Word. Jesus said that in the day of judgement many will say, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name and in your name have cast out devils and in your name done many wonderful works?” The chilling response will be, “I never knew you; depart from me you that work iniquity.” (Matt.7:22-23)

The last thing any true Christian would wish to do is to criticise a genuine work of God, but all we’re asking is to have biblical answers to what surely are legitimate questions.

When a real counterfeit evangelist holds a revival he will have his doctrine and practice more together than Todd Bentley. Judging someone by your own perception of his doctrinal position and stage presence will never enable you to pick the true from the faults. That can only be done by those with the gift of discerning spirits not by a rational process.

“The Shack” by William P. Young is an exceptional book. I went on line and read some reviews.Much controversy. The common people (you and I?) who live in the real world (most of the time) all love it. The religious people (theologians and good church people?) find it disturbing. This was also true when Jesus taught these truths. The religious people hated him (killed him) but with the common people He was a big hit. The same is true of Todd Bentley’s healing meetings. His “theology” and methods are a bit off ,but “who Cares!”, he is able to transfer the reality of a Living ,loving, caring, and healing God who wants to meet, touch , and heal you you in a personal way. A God who loves you just as you are!!

The Shack is an extremely unbiblical book that is giving people a false representation of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It has nothing to do with truth.

It’s a serious thing for a preacher of God’s Word to have their theology “a bit off”. No man is able to “transfer” any anointing. Only God gives His Holy Spirit.

    To jp5281

You say judging can only be done by the gift of discerning of spirits and not by a rational process. This is a dangerous statement because it is only partly true. Certainly the gift of discernment of spirits can help identify the true from the false, but we who are human can be fallible in the exercise of spiritual gifts, hence the scripture tells us to test the spirits. As I have already said this must be done by applying the plumb line of scripture. In this Todd Bentley is shown to be clearly off track. You say “his theology and methods may be a bit off but who cares?” That is an extremely unwise and dangerous statement to make. All true Christians should care and if I might respectfully say so, I think you would be well advised to study the scripture and apply its teachings if you want to discern correctly! May I further suggest that you carefully read 2 Timothy Chapter 4 vv. 1-5 and take careful note of the contents.

Either Bill has poor discernment, is also a false prophet himself, or just doesn’t give a toss. Either way, I have lost all respect for his ministry.
For all the reasons previously listed, I also believe TB’s ministry is not of God.

BTW you wont be damned for treating any prophet with caution, but you could be damned for believing one.

Having belonged to a church that became cult like, in the past, I am disturbed by the structure of Bills statement.

Bill tells us we can trust TB on his recommendation, but not on the word of God. He offers zero scriptures to back it up.Who is Bill? Does he think his soft tones will assure us. If he expects so, then I put him in the same group as TB.

Bill rips into the person (In soft tones) for asking a question. The question “How in Gods name can you endorse TB?” Bill says “By the way – criticism in the form of a question is not a question.” I hardly think it was a criticism. It was a good question in need of a biblical answer. Instead the message is given out that it is wrong to ask questions, and you are in deceit if you ask questions. (Very cult like, IMO)

What will Bill say when more and more evidence of TB’s false ministry come to light. Will he expect us to forget it and go about our merry lives.

I can only hope and pray that people will not be lured into false security based on Bills orchestrated, and carefully put together theatrical tones of peace and love. They were just as false as the opposite been violent, fishing ministry. At least with TBs ministry discernment is easier.

Very good points, thank you Ben.

“At least with TBs ministry discernment is easier.”

I couldn’t agree more. It takes more work to figure out the subtle ones.

BTW what are the things we will be judged on as Christians? The next time you are asked to dig deep to support such and such a ministry, keep this scripture in mind, and ask where that money is actually going?
The Word that Jesus spoke, something dear to Him.
Make sure you read to the end, so you also know the consequences if you don’t comply.
    Matt 25
    The Sheep and the Goats
31″When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34″Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37″Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40″The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

41″Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44″They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45″He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46″Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Bill Johnson says “By the way – criticism in the form of a question is not a question.”

The original question was “How in Gods name can you endorse Tod Bentley?” (It was that simple)

Jesus said in Matt 24″For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.

Bill implies that to question is wrong, he publicly belittled the simple question that was asked,he even twisted the simple question to make out as though it was an attack.

My question is, What was the point of Jesus warning us against false prophets if Bill teaches us that it is wrong to ask a question?

I cant think of any more nicer way to ask the question than this person did. Yet Bill ridicules that person for asking it. What he is really doing, is ridiculing you for asking questions in your own mind. Very subtle people control. Setting people up for the future and programming them to accept any thing that is told them without questioning.

This is not an innocent mistake, but a calculated programming tool.
Cults only survive when people fail to ask questions.

Do yourselves a favour and spend the next 80 minutes seeing one possible result of not asking questions. Listen to the carefully to the comments of the members they were not much different to many of us today. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1876667182447436591&q=jones+town&ei=sLaWSNvFDpTWqwOTxKWyBQ

  14. Ohh Mr. Bentley and his “minions” err I mean followers… Todd Bentley’s theology has more holes than that of a block of Swiss Cheese. As Sheepy knows I will have more on this in the near future.

As for the Shack… God the Father is a Black woman, God the Son is a Hebrew man (the writer got that right at least) and God the Holy Spirit in an Asian woman. I will leave that for you to figure out the theological mess that is.

The Shack is very has more doctrinal problems than just that, but if you read past that one and not see the problem with that, then explaining anything else wrong with said book will only be a complete waste of everyone’s time.

    Sheepy see you Wednesday!

Ohh yea 1st post on one of yer blogs!

    Blessings in Christ Jesus

I just found this blog. I don’t think we should jump to rejecting these guys so fast. Ironically David did things that don’t even compare with what Todd did. If you reject Todd and Bill make sure you cut out most of Psalms too. The point of Bill’s response is that Todd is a person loved by God and is a brother in Christ who is in need of great prayer and intersession and restoration. We as a church, myself included, am guilty of so easily divorcing those who have made some very poor decisions. It is for those who are in need of a savior that Jesus came for. I think the next step for those of us who are upset or have been hurt by Todd need to forgive him or we ourselves will be found without forgiveness. We also need to go one step further and pray for restoration for him out of love for him. It would do Todd a great disservice to smear his sin around as though you had none yourself. In love and in grace be Jesus to this world and exclude no one.

I noticed one of the other pastors/leaders endorsing Bentley besides Bill Johnson is Chuck Pierce. Now I realize the last church I went to has both these people there often. And the current AG church I go to, which I have believed in so that had many older Godly members, the Sunday School teacher did not pooh pooh The Shack & other members talked how good it was & made them feel closer to God, but what I see above about it .. nonsense! And my current AG Pasor made an announcement the pastor’s wife had been at some conference & got gold dust on her. Now I’m spooked. I thought I was going to a solid church. How could this be? There are so many outside church deceived with all his “spiritual” essene stuff, but now IN the church seems to be much deception. It’s hard to know who to trust now .. I’m feeling paranoid a bit. need sleep .. maybe that will help.
